Black Hills Caverns

The Black Hills Caverns are located outside of Rapid City, South Dakota, were discovered in 1882 by gold seekers, but the Lakota Indians had found strength in the power of the calcite crystals centuries before. Come discover the wonder of the glittering underground world and see its many fantastic animal formations. We offer tours: the Adventure Tour and the Crystal Tour. The Adventure is all three levels of Black Hills Caverns, including the Crystal main level. The Crystal Tour is an easy walking tour, only the main level and has approximately 50 stairs down and 50 stairs back up and it takes about 30 minutes. The Adventure Tour is a 3/4 mile hike, going underground approx. 230 feet and takes about an hour with about 150 stairs down and 150 stairs back up. Tours last about one hour. Gemstone Panning, A NEW, fun activity for rock lovers of all ages....learn to identify numerous Black Hills rocks, minerals, gems and fossils! Everyone will discover many fine specimens! Panning Options Include: The Big Bucket, Rock Hound, Fossil Bucket and Emerald Bucket The cave temperature is 48 F; a light jacket and tennis shoes are recommended. Hours of Operation:  June through August open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm May  and September open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm  May (weekends only through Memorial Day) September only open weekends *NO WIFI at the cave* NO pets NO handicapped features
