The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is unique bi-annual event that brings you face to face with a Black Hills legend. With more than 10,000 participants in a typical year the Crazy Horse Volksmarch is one of the most popular organized hikes in the United States.
Make plans to take a hike and cross the Crazy Horse Volksmarch off your bucket list! This 10k (6.2 mile) trek takes you on hilly and rocky paths and gravel work roads to the arm of the massive mountain sculpture where you get an up close look at the 87 foot (9 story) face of Lakota hero, Crazy Horse. The hike usually takes about two hours but there is a 500 foot increase in elevation so walkers will want to pace themselves.Water stations and port-a-potties are available along the route. The walk is sponsored by the Black Hills Chapter of the American Volksmarch Association (AVA) so there is a small fee for participants. Volksmarches are held the first full weekend in June (2020 June Volksmarch has been cancelled) and the last Sunday in September (the same weekend as the Buffalo Roundup). Pets of all kinds are prohibited on the trail.*Volksmarches are held, weather permitting.Though a family event, the rugged terrain is not suitable for infant strollers.
