Hours of Operation: OPEN during daylight hours May through October. No Advance booking requirement. You can book online the same day you plan to visit the attraction. Just 1/2 mile before the east entrance to the Badlands National Park. Family and Group rates available. Journey into the visual memories of homestead days at the Prairie Homestead. Experience the original “green” home just north of the Badlands of South Dakota. Fun for all ages. Explore a typical sod homesteader’s life in pioneer clothing. A real western adventure including farm animals and rare white prairie dogs. The Prairie Homestead is one of the only original farm sod homes intact today. This pioneer home was built in 1909 of dirt bricks and a grass roof. These early pioneers came West looking for land where they could fulfill their dreams. Family attraction. History room, with optional video presentation. A walking tour of the sod home, root cellar, outhouse, chicken coop and barn can be experience at your leisure. Experience the lifestyle of your pioneer ancestors. Prairie Homestead Visitor Center includes handicap accessible restrooms, snack bar with some seating, gift shop featuring antiques, pioneer souvenirs, western artwork, custom designed t-shirts, and more.
